Cindy Sherman is an American artist born in New Jersey and known for her talent in photography. Cindy tackles issues surrounding women, the influence of the media and identity . She uses her own body to interpret different personas using costumes and different makeup.Some her works can be seen as provoquing and controversial.Cindy's work evoques many gender issues in society such as the the shame of woman aging in our society.
She produces a varieties of works, some are full body length and some are half lenghth such as the first image. Some of her work are colorful while some are black and white.When we look at her work, we mainly focus on her and the charachters she embodies. It makes the viewer think and have their own meaning to the art because she doesn't give a title or a label. I think it has to do with the fact that women shoudn't be labeled, they shouldn't be limited , told what to do or fallow society's norms. Her artwork is very empowering and a lot of work seem to be done behind a single photo. the the lightning, the compostion , the costumes , wigs, makeup and the subject. Cindy sherman does it all by herself.
